Image Cropping — How It Works
Cropping removes unwanted areas from an image to improve composition, fit specific dimensions, or prepare photos for social media, print or web publishing.
What Is Image Cropping?
Image cropping is the process of removing outer areas of an image to highlight a subject, change the aspect ratio, or resize content for a specific platform. Unlike resizing — which scales the entire image — cropping selects a region and discards everything outside it, preserving full resolution within the selected area.
This tool performs non-destructive, lossless cropping entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API — your original file is never uploaded to any server.
Aspect Ratio — Why It Matters
An aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between an image's width and height. Different platforms require specific ratios: Instagram posts need 1:1 or 4:5, YouTube thumbnails need 16:9, passport photos need 3:4, and Facebook Open Graph images need 1.91:1.
Using the wrong ratio causes platform-side cropping, losing important parts of your image. Our 12 built-in presets cover every major platform use case — select one and the crop area locks to that exact ratio automatically.
Pixel-Perfect Cropping — Custom Dimensions Explained
For precise output dimensions, enter exact pixel values in the Width and Height fields. With Lock Aspect Ratio enabled, changing one dimension automatically updates the other to maintain proportion. Disable the lock to crop to any arbitrary dimension independently.
The crop info panel shows real-time pixel coordinates (X, Y origin) and dimensions of the selected crop area — essential for reproducible cropping when working with design systems or templates. All pixel values map 1:1 to output pixels at the image's native resolution, regardless of the display zoom level.
Rotation & Flip — Transform Your Image
The rotation slider adjusts the image from -180° to +180° with precision. Use the quick -90° / +90° buttons to correct portrait/landscape orientation. The Flip Horizontal and Flip Vertical toggles mirror the image in either axis — useful for correcting selfie camera mirroring or creating reflection effects.
All transform operations (rotate + flip) are applied to the source image before cropping, ensuring the final output reflects exactly what you see in the preview canvas.
Output Formats — JPG vs PNG vs WebP
JPG is best for photographs — smaller file size with adjustable quality (92% recommended). PNG is best for graphics, screenshots and images requiring transparency — lossless with no quality degradation. WebP is Google's modern format offering 25–35% smaller files than JPG at equivalent quality — ideal for web publishing.
The quality slider (10–100%) controls JPG and WebP compression. PNG quality has no effect since PNG is lossless. Use 85–95% for web images, 100% for archiving or professional output.
